36 Court Square Southwest, built for the National Bank of Alamance, sits directly across from the Alamance County Historic Courthouse in downtown Graham, NC. From the 1970s to the 1990s, the building housed the Graham office of Burlington’s Vernon Law Firm.
The Graham National Register Historic District describes the building as a “spectacular two-story building with a combination of a Renaissance Revival and Neo-classical style store front.” The first story’s granite facade with Corinthian pilasters echo the classical style of the Courthouse. The second floor facade is rich red pressed brick with arched windows. Copper doors and window work further elevate the building’s curb appeal.
The building is currently undergoing a complete renovation and restoration with all new HVAC, plumbing and electrical. Historic elements like the elaborate molded plasterwork ceilings on the ground floor and the original transom windows for the offices on the second floor will be preserved. The large central skylight on the second floor, removed in the 1970s, will be restored.
